[B]Unidentified Summer Lights[B]

It was late summer in 1964 as I recall I remember distinctly one evening . it was around nine or 10:00 at night sky was cool and clear stars shine brightly from my bedroom window.

I was fortunate to be given a telescope as a present to indulge my interests in astronomy. Many evenings were spent outside watching the stars and planets and the heavily bodies.

Of course in those days there was no television only radio. So I developed an interest in astronomy. Living on a farm had it’s advantages no light pollution the skies were clear the view uninterrupted by buildings.

One particular evening I spotted an interesting object in the night sky. This object was somewhat different from the passing satellites that whizzed pass at regular intervals. No this object was no satellite , satellites had a particular arc and followed the curvature of the earth and the speed was constant. The satellites I saw grew dim as the left the sunlight high above the earth’s atmosphere dipping in the earth’s nighttime shadow. I tried to look through my telescope but this object had no shape only a point of light that seemed to glow.

I watched this particular object for around 20 minutes and it seemed to just float for a few seconds then suddenly change directions sometimes from left to right then stop monetarily, then resume in a random wondering pattern then disappear with great speed.
One evening I saw two objects in different parts of the sky doing almost the same performance as the evening before. On average I would see around 4 of these object per week. This continued thought the summer months then seemed to cease. I thought at the time they were UFOs as I was about 13 years old at the time what else would you think at this age.

Later in life I still continued to see these objects over the years although less frequently and I did not have any rational explanation for these mysterious objects of light.
It was at university that I had read an article on high altitude balloons that the penny dropped. Could these lights I saw be high altitude military balloons ?

The possibility seemed plausible……. To be continued
