The Voyager Spacecraft Have Reached the End of the “Solar Road”

It’s has been 33-years since NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft was launched on Sept. 5, 1977 Since then the “twin” spacecraft has travelled some 17.4 billion kilometers (10.8 billion miles)

Both spacecraft have travelled beyond the Solar System where the Solar wind has ceased to have any effect.

The Earth just a tiny speck at some 7 billion miles

A second spacecraft, Voyager 2, was launched in Aug. 20, 1977 and has reached a position 14.2 billion kilometers (8.8 billion miles) from the sun. Both spacecraft have been traveling along different paths.

The Spacecraft have reached the end of the solar wind the Sun is just a distant speck. Both Spacecraft crossed into an area where the velocity of the hot ionized gas, or plasma, originating from the sun has slowed to zero.

The last portrate of the Solar system taken by Voyager

The Original spacecraft gave us the first close up look at Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune but not Pluto. Voyager 1 and 2 will continue on there interstellar journey towards the stars.

Both Voyagers flew beyond the orbit of Pluto and Neptune in 1989 and have left our Solar System.

Pioneers 10 and 11 probes were launched in the early 1970’s. Pioneers 10 and 11 are the first manmade object to leave interstellar space interstellar space is the space between the stars.

Pioneer 11's power supply is dead. Its last communication with Earth was in November 1995. Pioneer 10 is still functioning (barely) was last heard on March 1997 Pioneer 10 is not being tracked due to budget cuts.

Imagine what they might tell us, if only they still could, CarlCan. I can't help but remember the Star Trek episode about "V-ger" and wonder if Voyager will ever come this way again.

Yes I remember that episode.

Perhaps in when millions of years have passed the Voyager spacecraft will be in another galaxy.

So what does it mean when you say the power supply is dead? Could we still track it if it wasn't for the budget costs?

The voyager power supply were designed to work for around 10 years, they have been travelling for 30 plus years I thing we got a good run. The space craft can’t be tracked at these distances.
