The problems associated with unwanted sounds are in abundance in our day to day lives.
There are a variety of sounds that can be considered as being unpleasant. For example, your next door neighbor decides to play music on their stereo at high volume. If you happen to be a lover of movies and just like the turn up your own home theatre to the max without worrying the your partner or the neighbours there is a solution.
To quench all those unwanted sounds and stop them interfering with others, all you need to do is fill your wall cavities with balls!.
While this solution may seem rather odd it does work. Research conducted at Caltech found by filling your wall cavities with metal balls of a certain size reduces the sound problem. They also found that the sound being produced within the room stayed in the room meaning that it didn’t affect anyone else. The size criteria was critical in producing the desired effect.
The small ball bearings allowed the sound to move in one direction only. The spheres need not be metal other alternatives can be used like hard plastic materials including ceramics. Apart from alleviating the sound problem there are other benefits. The spheres can actually make energy by converting sound vibrations into electricity.
They can also be used to filter out certain sounds like high-frequency or low frequency sounds.
So the next time someone mentions” balls” don’t look surprised just think of the benefits.
