Over the next few night we are being treated to a yearly meteor shower one of many year around.
The Draconid shower is perhaps one of the best. We can see as many as 1,000 meteors per hour.
Rates of between 200 to 300 meteors per hour are not uncommon. This year is perhaps one of the best. The meteors will seem to come from a central point in the sky the constellation of Draco the Dragon.
The best times are just before dawn, although you will be able to see them at any time during the evening, the only problem will be a bright Moon.
The next two days will be the best window of opportunity to see bright meteors.
The forecast is right the peak will occur between 17:00 and 18:00 Universal Time on October 9, 2011.
Most meteor showers are instigated by transitory period comets. Meteor showers are named for their point of origin, meaning the constellation from which the meteors appear in the sky The Draconids, are sometimes referred to as the Giacobinids, to honor the observer who first sighted the comet that spawned this meteor shower.

This shower produced major displays in 1933 and 1946 producing thousands of meteors per hour .
There no guarantee that this number will be produced this year, still it is well worth the effort you may just be surprised by how many you may just see. Patience is the key you don’t need any fancy viewing equipment. Reasonable dark night skies will do.
