The Southern Skies are an excellent placed location to see bright expanses of stars and galaxies.
The Star Eta Carinae a star that rapidly brighten in the Southern hemisphere constellation of Carina.
In the middle 1800s,it was for a time the second brightest star in the Southern hemisphere.
Eta Carinae dimed only to suddenly brighten again for a short period in the late 1990s.
Although the Star Eta Carinae did not go Supernova but it did leave a vast expanse of gas and debris to form the Carina Nebula (NGC 3372).
The Star Eta Carinae itself is unstable it may well go Supernova in time, when it does it will light the nights of the Southern hemispheres for weeks.
It is the broader nebula in which Eta Carinae lies that is perhaps brighter and better known than its counterpart in the constellation of Orion.
I have to say that the Carina Nebula is perhaps more rich in tapestry with its vast expanses of colourful extensions that look like rising mountains of light and colour, perhaps a future birthplace of new stars.
