Technology certainly has its advantages. With the advent of smart cell phones the task of finding constellation and planets has been made simpler.
Want to find out where a particular constellation or planet is located in the night sky but you were not sure where to look. All you is your smart phone and a few apps.
There are many free apps available for the IPhone and Android cell phones.
I use a fee app called Sky eye, it’s essentially a mobile planetarium that gives me a visual look at the night sky.

When I spot an object I just move my cell phone and line it up with the particular star. the application will give me a visual representation of the object and shows me the star planet or constellation I happen to be looking at.
If you are not certain of the object you are looking at just move the cell phone it will show the object in question. You don’t even need a compass or torch.
Night sky observing is made somewhat easier by just using a smart phone. While star charts are often preferred there not exactly portable.
If you have an Apple or Android smart phone there are many applications you can download most of them are free.
There are many apps to chose from most perform the task. There also many more advanced applications on the market, these apps offer greater features and usually cost a few dollars.
