Poles Apart

Some are saying that the magnetic poles are about to reverse north becomes south.
“Apparently, on December 21st 2012, our planet will experience a powerful event.”
Well I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it. The last magnetic pole reversal occurred 800,000 years ago according to ferromagnetic sediment found in earth rock samples.
Some have said that geomagnetic reversal occurs with
“clockwork regularity” that is simply not true. From the data found in numerous rock samples obtained worldwide show the longest stable period between magnetic reversals is nearly 40 million years.
That episode occurred during the Cretaceous period some 65 million years BC.
Some say that the 11 year solar cycle can cause magnetic pole reversal. Again there is no evidence to suggest this is the case.
We need to differentiate between geomagnetic reversal and polar shift. Geomagnetic reversal is the fluctuation in the Earth’s magnetic.
Many people confuse geomagnetic reversal and polar shift as being
one of the same thing., again this is not the case.
Polar shift where the magnetic north pole shifts to the South
After the process is complete, our compasses would point toward Antarctica, rather than northern Canada.
Polar shift is not considered to be common event. The frequency of occurrence is in the order of a few times since the Solar System
was formed.
There are a couple of exceptions of planets that have undergone a polar shift.Venus (has a retrograde rotation.
Venus spins in the opposite direction to all the other planets.
The retrograde rotation was most likely caused by a planetary collision.
The other example is Uranus which rotates on its side. The axis shift
was the result of a gravitational tug-of-war caused by Jupiter and Saturn.
If you would like to see a polar magnetic reversal you would stand
a better chance of seeing Hell freezing over.

Hi S.L.
The demise of the Dinosaurs was a rapid event as a result of an impact from space.
While geomagnetic reversal occurred at about the same time period the process was a result of geological forces and would not have the properties to cause such a quick mass extinction.
