Our Sun is Having a Hissy Fit.

The Sun has been reasonably quiet so far during this 11 year period. We are currently heading towards the peak of the 11 year sun cycle towards the middle of 2013.
Although our sun does go through periods of relatively low activity every now and then sudden flares can occur, and these peaks are not always predictable.
Solar flares or coronal mass ejections (CME) can affect Earth at any given moment.
CMEs contain billions of tons of gas and radiation that are propelled into space at around eight million km/h. They are mind-bogglingly hot around 100,000,000C.
Earth’s atmosphere and Earth’s magnetic poles deflect most of the radiation and gases often culminating in beautiful auroras. Auroras occur when the ionised solar particles become trapped by Earth's magnetic field, seen as lights from the northern and southern latitudes of Earth.
There is a real risk that GPS cell phones and electrical power may be disrupted due to a large
solar storm producing a large solar flare the biggest flare produced so far in 10 years.
In 1989, a CME was held responsible for leaving six million people throughout Quebec, Canada, without power for several days.
If the flares are large enough it could cause make satellites to malfunction, even disrupting GPS signals. New solar storm could heading our way, we will know more in the next few days

Happy New Year S.L.
At this time of year we are at the closest point to the Sun in our yearly orbit around the sun.
