Ophiuchus (known as the serpent holder) is one of the 88 constellations, and was also one of the 48 listed by Ptolemy. Ophiuchus is the only constellation which is not counted as an astrological sign. Ophiuchus is depicted as a man holding a snake.

Historical event in constellation of Ophiuchus was the Supernova 1604, also named Kepler's Supernova.

Star Zeta Ophiuchi within the gas expanse left over by the Supernova of 1604

In the remnants of the Supernova the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE has found a massive, runaway star, called Zeta Ophiuchi. What we are seeing is bow shock created by the massive star as it speeds through the vast expanse of gas. Although the bow shock cannot be seen in the visible light spectrum however Infrared images obtained by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer can.

Zeta Ophiuchi is a very large star, with a mass of about 20 times that of our sun. The reason the star appears to be blue in colour is that the image was obtained in Infrared.

Zeta Ophiuchi once orbited around an even bigger star, the lager star exploded as a Supernova the gravity holding Zeta Ophiuchi was severed allowing Zeta Ophiuchi to shoot away like a runaway freight train.

Sounds like the snake handler got bitten by a super nova snake! Great picture!

How far and how fast can such a star travel?

Hi S.L.

Got to be careful where you grab a snake!!

We in Australia have 10 of the most deadliest snakes in the world.

The Star is currently traveling at a blistering 24 kilometers per second (54,000 miles per hour.
It will continue to travel for eons or become the next Supernova.

Is it likely to run into anything, like a comet, and asteroid, another traveling sun or a planet? And what would the result be? A massive explosion, implosion, debris field of enormous proportions, or would the smaller object simply be disintegrated?

If it does run into a planet or comet it would obliterate it, for that matter it would obliterate anything in its path. Its not going to run into another star anytime soon perhaps in the next 700 million years.

At least it isn't heading for us! I'm really glad to hear that... we have more than enough problems without a runaway sun coming our way! LOL

Our Sun wont bother us for another 4 billion years.
By that time we won’t be around (as a species I mean).
We will intimately be re-cycled our atoms will go to make up new stars and planets perhaps even people.
