Night Sky Photography

Most star gazers will most likely want to take pictures of the Moon and planets.
In the past the conventional method used for astrophotography was the film camera. Taking images of the night sky using a film camera was somewhat of a challenge, still it was the technology of the day and had been in use for over 50 years.
The film process yielded great images most of the time if you were extremely patient. Film stock and processing costs could put a very big hole in the hip pocket ,getting a great image on film could prove costly especially if it was in colour.
I remember using several rolls of film only to get one or perhaps two images that were of reasonable quality.
Unfortunately with film you did not know how an image would turn out until you processed the film.
With the advent of digital single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras the expense and guesswork in producing workable images was reduced.
Now it is just a matter of flicking a knob and you have instant access to all your images good or bad.

You can produce your own images of the night sky with a relatively inexpensive off the shelf digital camera.
I use a digital camera for taking images of the night sky. There are many different combinations you can use in astrophotography for example you can even use a video camera to capture of series of images and process and stack them using computer software.

Astrophotography can be rewarding and at times a little frustrating . Given a little time and patience the reward of capturing an image of a celestial body is priceless.
