microwave sky as seen by ESA's Planck satellite ESA image

When we look at an image like this we see the very begging of time its self.
The after effects let loose shortly after the big bang, we are seeing our birth to some extent as we are all made form elements of the stars.

What is this all about what does this image represent?

The images taken by a European satellite (Planck) are the most detailed microwave map of the sky and is a record of the oldest light in the universe.
To get a full picture of this microwave background, the light from our galaxy the Milky Way was digitally removed light from the foreground to reveal the dimmer background radiation.

The light area in the middle of the image is light from our galaxy the Milky Way.

The dark red areas of the image are cosmic microwave background noise energy. These red areas mark the very begging of the big bang and are the very oldest remnants left over by the formation of the universe some14billion years ago.

Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB)

CMB is radiation that is the remnant heat left over from the
Big Bang it’s like looking back on a fire’s hot embers you can still see the glow after the initial fire has ended. The CMB radiation was emitted long before stars or galaxies ever existed.

How do you measure the age of the Universe?

Cosmologists use the Hubble constant to rate the overall expansion of space to determine the age of the universe. Knowing the rate at which galaxies are separating, and the distances between them, one can work backwards to determine how much time has passed.
