mysterious illness form Space?

Villagers in southern Peru were struck by a mysterious illness after a meteorite made a fiery decent to Earth.
A local health department official reported that shortly after the crash residents complained of headaches and nausea brought on by a "strange odor,".
Several policemen who went to check on the reports also became ill and had to be given oxygen before being hospitalised.
Rescue teams and experts were dispatched to the scene, where the meteorite left a 30-meter-wide by six-meter-deep crater.
Boiling water started coming out of the crater and particles of rock and cinders were found nearby. Residents are very concerned.
But they were still puzzled over claims that it gave off fumes that sickened 200 people.
Witnesses told reporters that a fiery ball fell from the sky and smashed into the desolate Andean plain near the Bolivian border.
A scientist with Peru's Geological, Mining and Metallurgical Institute, said a geologist had confirmed that it was a "rocky meteorite," based on the fragments analyzed.
He said water in the meteorite's muddy crater boiled for maybe 10 minutes from the heat and could have given off a vapor that sickened people, and scientists were taking water samples.
Doctors had found no sign of radioactive contamination among families living nearby, but had taken blood samples from 19 people to be sure. Fear may have provoked psychosomatic ailments.

I don't think there is a scientific basis that the meteorite could be the harbinger of pathogens

No water was found to be in the meteorite.
The meteorite had hit a patch of muddy water already on the ground.
The tests were negative no sign of any extra terrestrial organism.
Cheers

It reminds me of something that happened in a village where a lake started boiling which instantly killed hundreds of people in a near by village. Apparently there was some sort of chemical in the water (methane I think).
gah, I wish I could find the source link.
But yeah maybe there was some sort of chemical in the water that was causing the illness, it only spread once it started boiling.

P.S. Comets of course are supposed to have brought bacteria/germs or whatever here, and are supposed to be the impregnators of life on Earth...maybe we are the germs?
