Moon’s influence possible cause of increased volcanic activity

July 21st 2007 11:42
The moon is responsible for Earth’s ocean tides and is well accepted that this is the case.
It is said that the Moon is responsible for romance and lunacy why not influence volcanic activity?

The Moon is receding from Earth at the rate of 3 cm per year, some scientific circles say that the Moons is so far away that it’s influence is not that great that it would trigger volcanic activity on Earth.
There is some scientific proof that volcanic activity has been linked with the Moon’s rotation around the Earth creating tectonic shifting causing volcanic activity and earthquakes.

Astronomer /volcanologist Steve O'Meara and wife Donna have conducted various studies and correlated events in history to support their theories.
They did some very intensive research into past eruptions such as the violent explosion of Santorini in Greece in 1650 B.C where most of the island was vaporized.

The O’Meara’s documented many hundreds of similar events both past and present including events like the eruptions of Mount Vesuvius, and Krakatoa.

The O’Meara’s calculated that the moons Perigee (the point when the Moon’s orbit is nearest the Earth)and found that all the events had the Moon at Perigee at the time of the eruptions.

The O’Meara’s continued to conduct further studies and went to the island of Stromboli. Stromboli is a very active volcano and is linked to the volcano on Mt Etna. Steve and Donna camped near the summit for two weeks. During this time they proposed a series of predictions with the eruptions of Stromboli if they where right the predictions should coincide with full Moon or at Perigee(the point when the Moon’s orbit is nearest the Earth) and indeed the eruptions where right on cue just as predicted the frequency of the eruptions were at their highest on the Full Moon.

Interesting...but...what of the more commonly accepted influence of the 11 year sun spot cycle, on the volcanic/seismic activity on Earth?

How did they correlate that with the moon's cycle? I do not doubt what they say is correct, but, I would suggest it only adds to the greater influence of the masive solar ejections from the sun, at the height of the sun's cycle, would you agree?

By the way, what did you think of my Hapgood/Einstein/Pole Swap rant?

cheers

Hi Fog,

The position of the Sun and Earth are in equilibrium therefore there is no perceived gravitational impact on Earth’s tectonic mantel.
The 11 years sunspot cycle relates more to climatic changes and increased ionization.
It also has an effect of raising the thickness of Earth’ upper atmosphere which played a part in the downfall of SKYLAB former US space station in 1979 sunspot cycle. The high plasma velocity ejected from the sun has a detrimental effect of communications and high voltage grids especially in Polar Regions. Yes there has been in the passed a reversal of Earth's magnetic poles. Although magnetic pole fiipping is more common on the Sun,we are overdue for another occurance here on Earth.

Carl,
verrry interesting, but, I am SURE I heard/read/watched somewhere that the big ejections from the Sun pulled on our gravity field and caused seismic disruption...are you saying this is not the case?

And what of Hapgood...you mention Pole Shift but do not go into any detail on the plausibility of Hapgood's theory?

So...do tell....

P.S. Plenty of stuff on the net to check out about it.

The gravity field your are referring to is generated by the solar wind this tends to bend and distort Earth`s magnetic fields especially at the polar regions. The Sun's gravitational forces are in balance therefore not putting undue stress on the Earth.....

In regards to Hapgood and Einstein correspondence....

A very intriguing hypothesis regarding the earth’s crust displacement and subsequent shifting. Centrifugal momentum created by the Earth’s rotation will produce forces on the Earth’s crust and if you apply the lays of physics something’s got to give.

A quote form Albert Einstein " gradualistic notions common in geology were merely a habit of mind, and were not necessarily justified by the empirical data."[1]
What Einstein was alluding to was although Hapgood’s theories were simplistic yet they did have merit and his ideas where not accepted by the status quo at the time.

It is accepted that continental drift and plate tectonics have some effect on the earth’s landmasses as we know are not stationary, but form parts of large, independently moving crustal plates. This motion is, however, very slow by human terms. What if you added an asteroid impact on Earth what then? (I am not referring to the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs) apart form the massive shock waves reaching every corner of the world, depending on the size of the asteroid and there is evidence that it has happened in the past with a smaller impact on earth.
This would give rise to tidal forces wiping out ancient cities in a very short space of time we only have go back to recent events that a small tectonic shift in the Asian basin caused widespread devastation of coastal areas.
