Martian Valley views
December 5th 2008 07:11
ESA the European Space Agency released this image taken by the Mars Express Space craft.
This is one of most detailed image of Echus Chasma region, just north of the Martian equator.
The intricate mountainous are about a 100 Km in length. The valleys shown in this image are 10 Km in length and up to a kilometer deep in places. It makes the Gran Canyon look small in perspective.
Animation video made of images taken by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board ESA’s Mars Express spacecraft
This image was taken with a stereo high resolution camera aboard the Mars Express. The region shows a lot of water has once flowed along these valleys, the darker areas are sediments. It’s unclear whether the water was from an ocean or ground water trapped just under the surface, perhaps ancient volcanic lava flows. Images like these show that Mars was very much Earth like in the past and perhaps even now there are some areas on Mars that would difficult to distinguish the difference.
