Lunar Eclipse this month
August 16th 2007 10:09
Get your telescopes and binoculars out on 28th (weather permitting) of this month to see the total Lunar eclipse. The lunar eclipse will be visible in its entirety for all of Eastern Australia and New Zealand only partially visible in Western Australia, and will be in progress at Moonrise for the remainder of Australia and most of Asia.
A Lunar Eclipse occurs when part or all of the Moon passes into the Earth's shadow usually happens in different parts of the world 2 to 4 times per year. The lunar eclipse is different form a solar eclipse, a solar eclipse occurs when the moon’s orbit crosses the Sun. A lunar eclipse is when the Moon crosses the Earth’s shadow.
According to my calculations the Moon will rise look towards the East you should see a bright full Moon around 6:00 pm the Earth’s shadow will slowly obscure the Moon and by 6:30 you will start to notice the Moon surface darkening slightly around 7:00pm the Moon’s surface should be almost obscure and by 7:40 pm the Moon will not be totally obscured. The Moon will start too visible again around 9:40pm
It will be visible at Moonset for the America, and will not be visible at all in Africa, Europe or Western Asia. You should be able to see some subtle colour variations during the eclipse.
