Russian Lunar Rover finally Found

Well it’s only taken 37 years or so but the Location of the Russian rover Lunokhod 1 was pinpointed.

The chance find came to a researcher working at The University of Western Ontario has helped solve a 37-year old space mystery. using lunar images and moon maps released by NASA.

CURRENT MOON

Professor Phil Stooke used the images from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) to help find the missing rover. The LRO will produce a very detailed map of the Moon. The LRO has other duties it will search for resources and future potential safe landing sites. The LRO also measures lunar temperatures and radiation levels.

The rover was traced by using it’s past mission history. It was possible to trace the rover's activities in fine detail based on the rover’s mission report.

The rover measured the magnetic field on the moon. The rover’s track can be seen in some of the images where the rover continually drive back and forth over the same route to improve the data.

Final resting place of Lunar Rover

The rover met it’s demise when it drove into a small crater. it accidentally covered its heat radiator with soil as it tried to get out again. The struggle to get it self free caused it to overheat and stop working. The rover final resting place shows up as a dark spot right where it stopped.

It's always good when a mystery is solved, CarlCan. Maybe the next one will fare better and work longer, now that we know what happened.

Hi S.L.

The Moon has a treasure trove of lost space junk mostly from Earth.
