Jupiter has had another massive hi,t almost to the day. In July 20 2009 A massive comet or large asteroid left a massive bruise on Jupiter surface.
Some 15 years ago you may recall the demise of comet Shoemaker- Levy 9 made a series of impact across Jupiter’s surface.
An amateur astronomer, Anthony Wesley of Australia alerted NASA that a new dark scar had appeared. Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., using NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility at the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii confirmed the first sighting.
Following up on a tip by an amateur astronomer, Anthony Wesley of Australia, that a new dark "scar" had suddenly appeared on Jupiter, in the morning between 3 and 9 a.m. PDT (6 a.m. and noon EDT) scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif using NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility at the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii, gathered evidence indicating an impact.
Infrared images show the likely impact point was near the south polar region, with a visibly dark "scar" and bright upwelling particles in the upper atmosphere detected in near-infrared wavelengths, and a warming of the upper troposphere with possible extra emission from ammonia gas detected at mid-infrared wavelengths.
We are indeed fortunate to have Jupiter a protect us from most comet and asteroids Jupiter’s is responsible in diverting large fragments from hitting Earth. Scientist are not sure what caused the impact it may have been a comet or asteroid but whatever it was it was enough to create an impact site the size of Earth!
