June Night Sky Guide
June 28th 2008 08:01
The month of June is almost at an end. There are plenty of planets and constellations to see in the evening sky. The Southern Cross is at its best seen high in the Australian evening sky best viewing time is from 6 pm onwards.
Looking towards the East and you will be able to see Planet Jupiter rising above the horizon ,you can see the constellation of Corona Australis this constellation look likes like a crown of small stars.
You may be able to spot it if the light pollution is low. If you live in an area away from city lights there is no mistaking this constellation.
The sky to the South West is alive with deep sky objects. Seen around 7 pm the Large and Small magellanic clouds can be seen as to the constellation of Chameleon to the right the keyhole nebula can be seen with a small binoculars. Unfortunately every year the ever increasing light pollution makes seeing faint nebulas difficult.
Looking Westwards the constellation of Leo the lion with planets Mars below and Saturn just above it. July the 5th a thin crescent new Moon is waxing (looking North West) Mars and Saturn are also prominent and to the left the constellation of Hydra the Serpent can be seen around 5:40 pm.
You can download the Skychart and make a printout to take with you for reference.
