The intrepid penguin wonderer named “Happy Feet” appears to be lost at sea. Happy feet made the world news when the penguin turned up on a New Zealand beach.
The emperor penguin made a right turn and headed for New Zealand some 2,000 miles off course landing on the New Zealand beach some months ago.
After spending a few months in a New Zealand zoo happy Feet was fitted with a tracking device and taken back to the waters of New Zealand southern ocean.
After tracking the penguin around 10 days he was making slow but steady progress heading back to the colony just off the shores of Antarctica, it seem that happy feet was not in any sort of hurry.
It is though that Happy Feet met an unhappy ending. There are other alternatives while the signal was lost. The tracking device may have fallen off or developed a fault.
GPS transponder loss is very common in wildlife research studies because the primary aim is the well-being of the animal being tracked.
Transponders are usually attached to the animal using a form of superglue.
In general a device attached in this manner will stay attached for a period of 3 to 5 months, depending on the species of animal being tagged.
It is hoped that the tracking device on Happy Feet has fallen off sooner than expected the other alternative is may have been taken by shark.
Stranger things have happened perhaps he is still out there and may find his spot back in New Zealand.
