Internet filtering an election sweetener?
August 15th 2007 01:31
Internet filtering is a case of too little too late the Federal government was going to regulate the internet 10 years ago and has yet achieved very little and their thinking is out of date and a waste of taxpayer’s money.
Now suddenly the panic is on (oh yes we have an election later this year) we must do something! The lackluster internet service in Australia is well below world standards with poor service low internet speed and inefficient technology. Although it is getting better but it should have been better years ago.
The government is about to introduce internet filtering kit for parents, yes I agree that children should be protected on the net, lets face it children are very technologically savvy and can find ways to circumvent the filtering system. A filtering kit is not going to take over the responsibility of the parent/s
There are hack sites showing how to hack the system. The internet is a powerful tool and should not be censored we still have free speech in this country.
The “filtering” should be the role of the parent not the government. Parents need to adapt to the technology or at least set some sort of boundaries for example have a computer in the lounge room not in the children’s bedroom, parents are not going to be able to stop their kids form going on chat rooms by banning computer use there are just going to find other means of getting on-line by using a friend’s computer or use a computer at school or library Adults should be able to communicate with their children and find some common ground but at least parents don’t have to “spy “on their kids internet emails to find out what is going on. Kids should be trusted but that trust has to be earned.

For the Sake of Argument
My Apologetics
Internet content filtering to protect children is a nobel cause that is technically impossible.
