image of Hartley 2 taken by the Deep Impact Space craft

Hartley2 dubbedThe comet of the year for 2010, Comet Hartley2 is no longer visible with the naked eye as it speeds off in the outer reachers of the Solar System.
NASA’s Deep Impact spacecraft approached within 700 kilometers of Comet Hartley 2. The comet is 2km (1.25 miles) long and about .2 km in diameter.

Deep impact photographed the comet as it briefly passed by. The images shows a structure of ice dust and debris tightly compacted, with jets of gas escaping. The Comet’s shape is much like a large bowling pin. This is one of the rare opportunities to see a comet at close quarters. Hartley 2 did give us a parting gift with a meteor shower.

I'm glad it didn't stop by while it was in our neighborhood, CarlCan!
