Robots were once considered as mere curiosity tails form science fiction stories. The movie genres form the early 1950s onwards made robots popular even giving them human characteristics. The term Robot is believed to have been coined by Czech playwright Karel Capek.
The concept of a robots has been around 2000 years even the Trojans had a robot of sorts in the form of a wooden horse. Leonardo da Vinci also dabbled in a form of humanoid robot around the year 1495.

How would you react if you were treated by a medical robot ?
Firstly how would you communicate with a robot, would visual or audio cues work?
Research is being presented recently at the Human-Robot Interaction conference in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The aim of the presentation was to address these issues on how to give a robot the ability to communicate and act appropriately when a human address it.
Recently I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, the surgeon ask me if I would prefer robot surgery.
I told him I would have to think about that…..
Researchers used socially accepted robot called Simon. Socially accepted I presume means that the robot has human like characteristics like hands a face and can vocalize and can respond to gestures.
The robot was able to determine with close to 80 percent accuracy when a human was trying to communicate with it and the robot could also distinguish when a human was just ignoring the robot.
(It puts a whole new spin on Simon Says)
A control set of “patients were given specific symptoms and they had to communicate to the robot.
It was interesting when humans and the robot interacted some “patients” were more accepting than others.
Medical robots will become “intelligent” with future advances in technology. In a preliminary study conducted at the Georgia Institute of Technology researchers have found that they can program a robot to understand when it gains a human's attention and when it falls short.

The Political Brief
Seriously we have only begun to scratch the surface of Artificial Intelligence. The Japanese do seem to be the leaders in robotics and not even they know how far their creations will be able to go. From toys to medicine to space exploration, the possibilities are endless.
