Seeing this image may make you say “where have I seen this image before”
The giant red spot on Jupiter comes to mind, only this image comes from Earth.
The image was taken by a NASA satellite named Terra (meaning Earth) late last year.
It shows a gigantic “storm” raging just off the east coast of South Africa.

The image was not a storm just a natural eddy known as a "current ring".
This particular "current ring" formed from the Agulhas Current flow.
The Agulhas Current flows mostly around the south eastern coast and tip of South Africa.
The satellite image shows this large eddy current, its purpose is bring up mineral and nutrients to the ocean surface.
The eddy was basically harmless , eddy currents are located within the earth’s oceans and are part of a natural progression of various global ocean currents that help regulate Earth’s weather.
Normally we don’t see currents of this magnitude often. The reason this current is so special is that this particular current was spotted from space. the current rings produced near Africa are among the largest in the world.
