First partial solar eclipse of the Sun for 2009

January 8th 2009 04:41
Partial Eclipse of the Sun

The first eclipse for the year will occur this month on January 26 2009. It is a partial solar eclipse, the term is annular eclipse of the Sun unlike a total eclipse were the Moon totally covers the Sun.
An annular eclipse occurs twice in one year while a total eclipse happens only once a year.

The partial eclipse starts in The South Atlantic then crossing the Indian ocean and making landfall in Indonesia ending in Borneo at around sunset.Unfortunately this partial eclipse will not be seen in Europe or the USA.

Australia will see a partial eclipse but will favour the northern part of the continent with Perth Darwin and Alice Springs even Adelaide will see about 18 % of the eclipse. The eastern states of Australia will see only a tiny fraction of the eclipse as the Sun will be approaching sunset.

I must stress this point do not look at the Sun without eye protection.

There will be a total eclipse of the Sun in July 2009. China will have the best view of the eclipse lasting in excess of 5 minutes the longest eclipse of the 21 century.

Another eclipse I'll get to miss, CarlCan. In all my years, I've only been able to see two! Most of the time, I've either been in the wrong area or the cloud cover has been too dense to see anything but a brief darkening of an already dismal day!

WoW, thanks for the reminder, Carl. As one of the eclipse fans, I can't afford to miss this spectacular scene!

Hi S.L., Wilson Pon

Eclipses are difficult things to see. Yes weather conditions locations all play a part.
The internet comes in handy, there will be a few live streams available at the point of totality. I will not get a good view of the partial eclipse down under as I live in the Queensland and its our rainy season. I hope to get a few images for the blog.
