Face on Mars lost civilisation?

Cydonia the face of Mars
I recall purchasing a copy of “The Face of Mars’ back in 1986.
A book written about certain images sent back to earth from the Viking mars space mission in the 1970s.
Two Viking Martian Landers were sent to mars on a mapping and terrain testing mission.
Among the thousands of images sent back to earth there appeared to be an image of a human like face cut out of the Mesa rock.
These images which NASA concluded that the so called image of a “face” was caused by light and shadow anomalies.
I must admit when I read the book and looked at the images I was intrigued. Could these be images left by an lost civilization?
There are still many conspiracy theorists that believe that images are real and that there was some sort of cover up involved.
The images sent back from mars in the 1970s were the best that technology had to offer at the time. Certainly the images were compelling but they did not have the image resolution that cameras have now.
Mars Global surveyor took more resent pictures over the same location that Viking orbiter tool some 30 years ago. The pictures taken by Global surveyor are much clearer and show more definition in the images taken. As we compare the early Viking pictures with the images that Global surveyor took in 1998 you begin to see that the contrast and luminance areas are more defined in the images taken recently.
Sometimes what you see is not what’s really there.

It was not just the 'face', but a number of other anomalies found there as well.
Who knows...but one thing is for sure, NASA had steadfastly refused to do a high res photo pass over the area for years, and now we have a photo showing severe degradation...maybe this is just weathering over the 30 years, no idea.
However, that address to the United Nations was rather compelling, particularly the computer analysis of the image, showing the surface relief remaining a 'face' through 180 degrees, a little more than intriguing I would say!
