Double Stars

March 14th 2009 06:25
double star named Albireo is located in the constellation of Cygnus. Albireo shines with a soft blue colour.

When you look at star in the night sky you will probably see a star as a single point of light, most are just a single point of light.

With the invention of the telescope began new discoveries in astronomy. The human eye sees stars as a single point of light when enough magnification was used some apparently single stars where reveled as two stars sometimes even more.
A single star would appear to have perhaps three points of light what the observer was seeing was other somewhat dimmer stars in close proximity to the main star . Sometimes these stars are separated by great distances but appear to be in close proximity to each other when seen from earth.

Alpha Circini

Some stars are linked by one another these stars are referred to as binary stars. The image in this blog is double star named Albireo is located in the constellation of Cygnus. Albireo shines with a soft blue colour.

Binary stars are very interesting objects to study sometimes stars seen in the binary system can interact especially when one of the stars is more massive than the other. If the star is massive enough it could destroy the companion star.

Mizar and Alcor located in the constellation of Ursa Major Mizar and Alcor are binary stars the orbit each other they have an orbital period of hundreds of thousands of years

Fascinating stuff, CarlCan! I've always wondered what binary stars were (Star Trek mentioned them). I'm with Lily on getting a telescope! A really good one!
