The planetary conjunction was a highlight this month (May 2011), still there are few more days left if you missed it and can been seen in both hemispheres.
You can still get to see the planets in a ‘group’ formation for the next few days.
Observers in the Southern Hemisphere need to be out of bed by 5:30 AM eastern time look toward the east just above the horizon.
Viewers in the Northern Hemisphere look to the east just above the horizon shortly after sunset.
If you like meteors and you missed the Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower earlier this month you can still catch the odd meteor or two.
If you like to see more intense meteor showers then July will be the one to see.
July 28, 29 - Southern Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower will be at it’s peak, early mornings are best although you can see up to 15 or more meteors per hour.
Comets
There will be a few comets in the oncoming months that are visible with the naked eye.Comets are usually small objects, some have solid cores only a few kilometers wide. They are usually elusive creatures, many have highly eccentric orbits, visitors from the cold reaches of space.
There are a few that crash into the Sun comets colliding with our Sun is very common. Comets are discovered regularly it won’t be surprising that a new comet may spring up out of the blue. Comet C/2011 C1 ( McNaught ) will be visible this month May 2011with the naked eye.
Earlier this month a comet collided with our Sun triggering a Coronal Mass ejection captured by the SOHO stationary satellite. Comets colliding with the Sun are common often the comet just fizzes out, others like this one create quite a visual impact.
