Comet 103P/Hartley 2 is still very distant here is an early glimpse the comet's tail is starting to form
Comet 103P/Hartley 2 will be seen in our skies in the next few weeks.
Fist discovered by Australian astronomer Malcolm Hartley in 1986.
Comet 103P/Hartley 2 will make a relatively close to Earth at a distance of 17.7 million kilometers on October 20 2010. The skies will be Moonless so this will help create good viewing conditions.
In the mean time observers in the Northern Hemisphere will be able to see the comet nearly all night long in the northeast during mid-October.
For observers in the Americas will catch a glimpse of the comet on the night of October the 7th.
Although the comet will be dimly visible to the unaided eye from locations that have minimal light pollution.
A pair of binoculars or small telescope will make the comet much more distinct. Comet 103P/Hartley 2 will be visible from almost anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere.
Southern Hemisphere observers won’t miss out we will be able to see in our Southern skies from mid-October onwards.
I will post more information on the comet’s location over the next few weeks.
