China's long march to the Moon

January 6th 2008 05:14
China has joined the group of Moon adventures with the launch of its lunar orbiter.
The nation proudly unveiled images of the moon taken by its first lunar satellite, launched in October 2007. Chang'e-1, named after a mythical Chinese goddess who, according to legend, flew to the moon.
This achievement is proof of the country's technological prowess and ability to land an astronaut on the moon in the near future. The nation’s thousand year dream of reaching the Moon has finally come true.

China is the third country after the USA and the former soviet union to successfully launch humans in space. China is planning to launch China a third manned spacecraft, Shenzhou VII, later this year (2008).

Its a space race for good. But it is to be seen what gains Google gets from the initiatives. It must be having plans for Google Moon and many more in the roster. After all, robotic land rovers taking and beaming in high res pictures have a lot of value from the mapping perspective.

Hi Arun,
Generally maps that are interesting tend to be popular. These maps include Earth location maps and maps of Moon. Perhaps Google intends to expand its Earth and Moon maps in the future.

The Moon is still a great place to explore and it is great to see images of the Moon from a new perspective.
