Lyrids Meteor Shower

Its meteor season, although meteors are hitting the earth constantly there are times when meteor concentrations fields tend to be thicker. These fields are left over deposits from passing comets. The earth does pass though this dust fragments that’s why there is an increase of meteors hitting our atmosphere.

Lyre is the name derived from the lyre, a stringed musical instrument well known for its use in classical antiquity.

The Lyrids meteor shower produce a medium to average show depending on the season.

The Lyrids on average produce about 20 meteors per hour at their peak. These meteors can be seen as bright dust trails that last for several seconds.

This year's shower should peak on the night of April 21 and the morning of the 22nd, although some meteors can be visible from April 16 - 25.

The quarter moon will set early in the evening, leaving a dark sky for the best possible viewing in dark locations. Look for meteors radiating from the constellation of Lyra after midnight.

Saturn at Opposition

The ringed planet will be at its nearest approach to Earth. The best time to view and photograph Saturn and its moons is late March early April. Saturn's rings are tilted and will be almost edge-on this year and will be very difficult to see.

Will the view be the same in the northern hemisphere as in the southern? And can I borrow a really big fan to blow the clouds away so I can watch?

Hi S.L
The view will apply to the northern hemisphere.
Clouds can be a problem.

You can try just before dawn depending on the weather.
It has been cloudy where I live as we are moving into our "winter"

Where I live its sub- tropical we tend to get all kinds of weather. (I Must not grumble)

I'm always up before daylight, CarlCan. I'll give it a look-see. Wish me luck and clear skies!
