April Showers
April 15th 2009 06:46
Seeing the blanket of stars against a dark velvet sky is always an enjoyable sight.
Occasionally the stars are somewhat outshine by a very bright but brief streak of light.
Meteorites fall on earth regularly most of us have seen them.
There are annual events that make meteors fall to earth more frequently this is when the earth passes through the path of a comet or comets. Comets such as Hallys comet although the comet has long disappeared for the next sixty years, the dust particles the comet has left behind still remain. And depending on the calendar month the frequency of meteors increase dramatically.
Often the meteors showers have names referred to as the Lyrids meteor shower. Lyrids being the constellation of which the meteors seem to be coming from. (Lyre a small but brilliant constellation, Lyre is crowned with the bright star Vega, also known as the Harp Star.)
Some months are better than others for viewing meteors. Generally the most reliable meteor shower of the year is the Geminids (December 13-14) Geminids are characterized by their multi-colored displays lasting several seconds.
At peak times up to 40 meteors can be seen in one hour. Meteor showers are not limited to one part of the world. Anyone with a clear view of the night sky can view the visual show regardless of where they live.
I hope to be able to take a few photographs if weather conditions allow, if successful I will post a few in my next blog update regarding the current meteor shower.

I personally think that the Perseids meteor shower is the most gorgeous and magnificent metoer shower of all! That's why it got the name, "Tears of St. Lawrence" in early Medieval Europe!
