Apollo 11 Tapes Missing
December 31st 2007 16:53
At least the original video tapes of that historic event seem to be. NASA seems to have misplaced original Apollo 11 video recordings from those historic lunar missions. Included in the lost tapes are videos made during the Apollo 11 landing on the Moon and Neil Armstrong's historic voice message "One small step ….."
The original master tapes where on what was then 2 inch tape. I still have some original tapes from the 60s not of the Apollo mission of cause, the tapes I have are from early 1960 Australian television shows. The tapes are still in good condition and I have no doubt that the Apollo tapes are still in pristine condition but unfortunately the equipment to playback these recordings is no longer working.
NASA is still in the hunt for the tapes. They say that while the rest of the world was watching fuzzy images on the television, cameras aboard the lunar module were sending back video that was "far crisper and more dramatic." Only a handful of people saw those images, and no one at the time thought to make copies.
Now some 36 years later, and with plans to make a return trip to the moon, suddenly there is an interest in finding these tapes . There's only one problem. No one can find them.
The search actually began because of a retired California ground station engineer and several Australian technicians who meet regularly for reunions, the search still continues.
