50 years in Space
October 6th 2007 13:33
Almost to the day I vividly recall sitting at my school desk listening to the crackling speaker hearing the strange sound of BEEP-BEEP -BEEP the sound of Sputnik orbiting the Earth. I was 7 years old and for me the start of a very exciting discovery into the new birth of space exploration.
I would listen on my short wave radio for the Beeping tell tale signal and would rush outside and try to watch every night for a week before catching a glimpse of Sputnik, for me this was the stuff from science fiction coming to life.
Space travel has notched up its first 50 years. Since my early human existence I have been fortunate to be to witness people landing on the Moon look at pictures from other planets. Humans no longer bound by the atmospheric shell we have ventured into space and explored other worlds seen stars at the very edge of the universe.
The Americans and Russians put animals in space (not their finest hour) by 1961 the first human made history by being the first human to orbit the Earth and a cause of great concern for the Americans the rest is now history. Hopefully humans will return to the Moon and continue to explore the far reaches of space.
