Astro Earth - October 2007

Finding Neptune in the Night Sky

October 29th 2007 02:39
The weather in south east Queensland has been overcast lately. I am not complaining as the much need rain is badly needed. I had hoped to take some photos of the comets and I hope to do so later this week but for now something a little different.

I was asked a question recently on whether we can see the planet Neptune with the naked eye

Comet sudden brightness

October 27th 2007 09:33
Comet 17P/Holmes

Comet 17P/Holmes has undergone a dramatic outburst in just 24 hours the comet became a million times brighter practically overnight it was around magnitude 23 too dim to be seen with the naked eye to magnitude 2 (easily visible to the unaided eye) no tail is yet visible it’s just a “blob” at the moment. The reason for the sudden brightness is yet unknown the most likely scenario is heat from the Sun penetrated a tiny crack in the comet’s icy core, causing it to melt and crack open abruptly, spewing out lots of dust and gas increasing the amount reflected sunlight

Burning Sun

October 20th 2007 06:58
A new discovery could provide quicker warning of impending coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Whereby anything up to a billion ton of super hot gas can erupt from the Sun, triggering radiation storms near Earth. The CMEs have damaged numerous satellites in the past especially communication satellites and may expose astronauts to dangerous doses of radiation.
CME from the Sun

Many astronauts have reported seeing white streaks of lights even when they covered their eyes this is due to the high speed cosmic partials reaching the retina in the back of the eyes

New Comet Comming

October 17th 2007 10:45
This month marks the first return of a new periodic comet named C/2007 F1 (LONEOS) discovered in 1998 by Yuji Ohshima.

Most comets can be very difficult to see especially for people living near on in brightly lit urban areas. On average there are many comets that make a round trip around the Sun every year most of these comets are very dim and not visible with the naked eye. On accessions we are treated to a spectacular appearance by a bright come like comet Mc Naught that appeared in January this year

Extreme weather patterns?

October 11th 2007 03:55
Are we experiencing bizarre weather patterns?
Weather patterns have certainly changed over the years so what is normal and what do we class as extreme. Generally we can recall episodes of storms floods or heat wave conditions. How many times have you heard someone make a comment about how hot or cold it has been or it`s never been this hot or dry or whatever before?
We have topics like global warming as the cause and effect of changing climatic conditions, although this is not scientifically proven. There are other factors to consider besides global warming the weather we are experiencing will at times be extreme with high winds hail, and torrential rain to look forward too

An asteroid between Mars and Jupiter has been renamed 7307 Takei in honor of the actor George Takei known for his role as Sulu in the original "Star Trek" series and movies.
A few weeks ago the Committee on Small Body Nomenclature of the International Astronomical Union approved the name "7307 Takei" for the asteroid previously labeled "1994 GT9." The Takei reference will be used in the scientific community to identify this minor body from now on. Only about 14,000 asteroids have been named after specific people, out of about 400,000 such bodies known to exist.
Other asteroids have been named after Star trek characters these include characters for the series “Star Trek Deep space nine

50 years in Space

October 6th 2007 13:33
Almost to the day I vividly recall sitting at my school desk listening to the crackling speaker hearing the strange sound of BEEP-BEEP -BEEP the sound of Sputnik orbiting the Earth. I was 7 years old and for me the start of a very exciting discovery into the new birth of space exploration.

I would listen on my short wave radio for the Beeping tell tale signal and would rush outside and try to watch every night for a week before catching a glimpse of Sputnik, for me this was the stuff from science fiction coming to life
